Discover the countryside east of Kathmandu on this rewarding day of culture and gentle walking. Drive to Panauti, one of the best-preserved medieval Newar towns in Nepal, set at the meeting of two rivers, and explore its brick lanes and the 13th-century Indreshwar Mahadev temple. Then hike through terraced fields, forest and small farming villages up to Namobuddha (1,750 m), one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal, where the Buddha in a former life is said to have offered his body to a starving tigress and her cubs.
At the top, visit the stupa and the large, beautifully decorated Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, home to hundreds of young monks, and enjoy the views of the Himalaya on clear days, before driving back to Kathmandu via Dhulikhel. A private vehicle and an English-speaking guide are included.
