Hidden in the remote Mugu district of the Karnali region, Rara Lake (2,990 m) is Nepal’s largest and deepest lake – 10.8 sq km of water that shifts from turquoise to sapphire under snow-capped ridges and dark forests of blue pine, spruce and juniper. Getting there overland takes days, but on our 4 Days Rara Tour by Air (3 nights / 4 days) flights to Nepalgunj and on to the mountain airstrip of Talcha put you on the lakeshore by the second morning, with two nights in Rara National Park to enjoy one of the quietest, cleanest landscapes in the Himalaya.

The journey starts with a one-hour flight west across Nepal to Nepalgunj on the Terai plains, where you can visit the busy bazaar and the Bageshwari Temple in the evening. Next morning a small aircraft carries you over the Siwalik and Mahabharat ranges into the Karnali hills – a spectacular 45-minute mountain flight – to Talcha, a short jeep ride from the lake. At Rara you go boating on the crystal-clear water, walk the lakeshore trails and hike up to Murma Top (about 3,700 m) for a panorama of the entire lake framed by the Kanjirowa and Saipal Himalaya.

The 106 sq km national park protects red pandas, musk deer, Himalayan black bears and more than 200 bird species, and in spring the forests are bright with rhododendrons. With full board at Rara, a 3-star (standard) or 5-star (deluxe) hotel in Nepalgunj and all flights and jeep transfers included, this is the easiest way to experience Nepal’s “Queen of Lakes”.

Fly west from Kathmandu along the Himalaya to Nepalgunj, a sub-metropolitan city in Banke district on the Terai plains, close to the border with Uttar Pradesh in India and 16 km south of Kohalpur. Transfer to your hotel. In the evening visit the Bageshwari Temple, one of the Shakti Peeth shrines of the goddess, and wander through the colourful bazaar with its tongas, sweet shops and fabric stalls.

An early transfer to Nepalgunj airport for the mountain flight to Talcha (2,737 m) – one of the most beautiful short flights in Nepal, over forested ridges and the Karnali valley. A local jeep takes you the short distance to Rara Lake. Check in, rest to adjust to the altitude, and take an easy afternoon walk along the shore as the colours of the lake change with the light.

Day 03Rara Lake day – hike to Murma Top, boating and forest walks
Optional hike: about 2 hours each way | Highest point: Murma Top (about 3,700 m) | Overnight: Rara (full board)

After breakfast choose your day. Hike up through pine and juniper forest to Murma Top – about two hours each way, or hire a horse – for the classic view over the whole lake with the snow peaks of Kanjirowa and Saipal on the horizon, and return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon enjoy boating on the lake (20 minutes included), walk the lakeshore trail or simply relax in the silence. Watch for red pandas, musk deer, langurs and waterfowl such as great crested grebes and coots in winter.

After an early breakfast drive back to Talcha airport for the flight to Nepalgunj, then connect to your flight to Kathmandu, arriving in the afternoon. Mountain flights depend on the weather, so please keep a buffer day before any international departure.

Notes for this tour

Pace and grade: Easy, but Rara lies at 2,990 m – take the first afternoon slowly, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol on arrival. The Murma Top hike is optional.
Domestic flights: This tour uses four domestic flights. The Nepalgunj–Talcha sector is operated by small aircraft and depends on mountain weather; delays or cancellations are possible, so keep one spare day before your international flight. Baggage on the Talcha flight is limited to about 10–15 kg. Mountain flights depend on visibility and are sometimes delayed or rescheduled; if a flight is cancelled we transfer you by road or adjust the programme. Domestic baggage allowance is normally 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand baggage.
Early starts: Flights to Talcha leave early in the morning, when the weather is most stable.
What to bring: warm clothes (a down jacket in winter), gloves and cap, personal medicines, comfortable walking shoes, a torch and a walking stick. Accommodation at Rara is simple and electricity may be limited.
Flexibility: the order of sightseeing may be changed to suit festivals, temple closing times, flight schedules or road conditions, without missing any included visits.

It runs all year. October to December and February to April usually offer clear skies and pleasant temperatures; June to September is the monsoon, with green landscapes but more cloud and rain.
