Follow the early life of the Buddha in a single day. The Full Day Lumbini & Kapilvastu Tour (about 7.5 hours) is a private sightseeing tour by air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide, starting and ending at your hotel in Lumbini, about 22 km from Bhairahawa and 315 km south-west of Kathmandu. Entrance fees and mineral water are included.

In the morning you drive about 27 km west to Tilaurakot, believed to be the site of ancient Kapilvastu, capital of the Shakya kingdom, whose ruins extend over about two and a half miles. Here Prince Siddhartha grew up in luxury with his father King Suddhodana and left the palace at the age of 29 to seek enlightenment. Walk among the excavated brick foundations of the palace, the moat, the ramparts and the eastern gate through which he is said to have departed, and see the coins, pottery and toys in the Kapilvastu Museum. If time allows you can also stop at Kudan, where the Buddha is believed to have met his father after his enlightenment.

In the afternoon return to Lumbini, where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama – tradition says the newborn took seven steps, a lotus blooming under each. Visit the Maya Devi Temple and its marker stone, the Ashoka Pillar, the Puskarini pond and the Bodhi tree, then tour the monasteries of the Monastic Zone and the World Peace Pagoda.

At 9:30 am you are picked up from your Lumbini hotel and driven to Tilaurakot, the capital of the Shakya kingdom, about 25–27 km west of Lumbini; its location matches the descriptions in the Buddhist texts. Explore the palace ruins and the Kapilvastu Museum until about midday. Return to Lumbini for the Sacred Garden and the Maya Devi Temple, stop for lunch, then visit the monasteries of the Monastic Zone and the Peace Pagoda. Back at your hotel at around 5 pm.

Pace and grade: This is an easy sightseeing tour with short walks on uneven stone steps and temple courtyards; it is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Lumbini: the Sacred Garden is a place of pilgrimage – please be quiet and respectful, and remove shoes inside the Maya Devi Temple. Days are hot from April to June, so carry water and a hat.
Pick-up: 9:30 am from your hotel in Lumbini. Transfers from Bhairahawa airport, Butwal or the Sunauli border can be added (about USD 20 for one person, USD 10 per person for two or more).
Booking: instant confirmation for individual travellers booking at least 48 hours ahead; groups should book at least 10 days in advance.
Flexibility: the order of sightseeing may be changed to suit festivals, temple closing times, flight schedules or road conditions, without missing any included visits.

October to March is the most pleasant time on the Terai plains; February to May is best for wildlife sightings but April to June is hot. The tour runs all year, with fewer activities in the July–August monsoon.

The grade is easy, with a maximum altitude of about 150 m. It is suitable for most travellers, including families with children and seniors; walking is mostly short and on paved paths or easy trails.

Lumbini is a sacred pilgrimage site. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes inside the Maya Devi Temple and monasteries, walk clockwise around stupas, keep your voice low and ask before photographing monks or rituals.

Pigeon Travel is easily one of the best travel companies I have dealt with!
