Namobuddha/Dhulikhel Day Tour

Overview

Some 40–45 km east of Kathmandu, on a forested hilltop between Banepa and Panauti, lies Namobuddha – one of the three holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the Kathmandu region. According to the Jataka tales, it was here that Prince Mahasattva, a former incarnation of the Buddha, offered his own body out of compassion to a starving tigress who could no longer feed her cubs. The Namobuddha & Dhulikhel Day Tour (about 7–8 hours) is a private excursion by air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide, entrance fees and mineral water included.

The drive takes you past Bhaktapur, the giant Shiva statue at Sanga and the market town of Banepa, then up through Tamang and Newar villages and terraced fields. At Namobuddha (about 1,750 m) you visit the white stupa, hung with colourful prayer flags, that is said to contain the prince’s remains, and the great Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, home to hundreds of monks, whose golden roofs crown the ridge. A short trail leads up to the small shrine with a stone carving of the tigress story. On clear days the view stretches along the Himalaya from Ganesh Himal and Langtang to Dorje Lakpa, Gauri Shankar and even Everest.

In the afternoon continue to Dhulikhel (1,550 m), the administrative centre of Kavre and an old Newar trading town on the route to Tibet, for lunch with a mountain view and a stroll through its brick lanes and temples before returning to Kathmandu.

You are picked up at 9:30 am and drive through Bhaktapur, Banepa and Dhulikhel to Namobuddha. Visit the stupa and the Thrangu Monastery, and walk the short trail to the tigress shrine. At about 2:00 pm drive to Dhulikhel for lunch (own expense) and a walk around the old town, then return to Kathmandu by about 5:00 pm.

Pace and grade: This is an easy sightseeing tour with short walks on uneven stone steps and temple courtyards; it is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Monastery etiquette: remove shoes and hats in the shrine halls, walk clockwise around the stupa and keep quiet during the monks' prayers.
Pick-up: the standard start time is 9:30 am from your Kathmandu hotel; other times can be arranged. Airport pick-up or drop-off can be added for about USD 10 per person each way.
What to bring: comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunscreen and some cash for snacks and souvenirs.
Flexibility: the order of sightseeing may be changed to suit festivals, temple closing times, flight schedules or road conditions, without missing any included visits.

It runs all year. October to December and February to April usually offer clear skies and pleasant temperatures; June to September is the monsoon, with green landscapes but more cloud and rain.

The grade is easy, with a maximum altitude of about 1,750 m. It is suitable for most travellers, including families with children and seniors; walking is mostly short and on paved paths or easy trails.

Mountain views depend on the weather. October to December and February to April usually give the clearest skies, and early mornings are best in every season. During the monsoon (June to September) clouds often hide the peaks after sunrise, but the scenery is lush and green.
