Patan, also called Lalitpur – the “City of Beauty” – is the oldest of the Kathmandu Valley’s three royal cities, and its artisans have been famous for bronze casting and woodcarving for centuries. Its Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perhaps the most harmonious of all, filled with pagodas, stone temples and palace courtyards decorated with some of the finest carving in Nepal. Our Patan Darbar Square Day Tour (about 4 hours) is a private half-day walk with an English-speaking guide, hotel pick-up, entrance fees and mineral water included.
After the short drive across the Bagmati, your guide leads you around the square: the 17th-century stone Krishna Mandir, whose friezes tell the stories of the Mahabharata and Ramayana; the pagodas of Bhimsen and Vishwanath; and the old royal palace with its courtyards – Mul Chowk and Sundari Chowk with its sunken royal bath. The Patan Museum in the palace, one of the best museums in South Asia, displays exquisite bronze and stone sculpture.
You then wander the backstreets to the Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar), a 12th-century Buddhist monastery with a gilded facade where young boys serve as temple priests, and to the metal workshops where craftsmen still cast statues by the lost-wax method. It is a fascinating morning of art, faith and daily Newar life.
