High on a ridge above the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers stands Manakamana, the temple of the wish-fulfilling goddess – one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Nepal. Its name comes from mana, heart, and kamana, wish: devotees believe that a wish made sincerely here will come true. The Manakamana Darshan Day Tour takes you from Kathmandu by private vehicle along the scenic Prithvi Highway to Kurintar, where Nepal’s first passenger cable car lifts you 2.8 km up the hillside to the temple in about 10 minutes. Return transport, both-way cable car tickets and a guide (for foreign guests) are included.
The two-tiered pagoda temple, in Gorkha district about 105 km from Kathmandu and 12 km south of Gorkha town, stands at about 1,302 m and is dedicated to Bhagawati, an incarnation of Parvati. Its legend is linked to the 17th-century queen of King Ram Shah of Gorkha and her devotee Lakhan Thapa, whose descendants still serve as priests. Pilgrims queue to offer flowers, coconuts and prayers, and on clear days the Manaslu, Himalchuli and Annapurna ranges rise to the north.
After darshan and puja wander through the pilgrim bazaar of sweets, bangles and offerings, have lunch, then ride the cable car back down – with views over the river valley – and drive back to Kathmandu.
