Overview

Experience the wilderness of Chitwan in boutique comfort. The Barahi Jungle Lodge Luxury Safari Package (2 nights / 3 days) is based at one of Nepal’s finest jungle lodges, set on the banks of the Rapti River at Andrauli in the quiet western part of Chitwan National Park, about 32 km from the main highway. Elegant deluxe boutique huts, a riverside pool, a spa and terraces overlooking the forest make it the perfect base for a luxurious safari, with three meals a day on an à-la-carte menu and all park fees and naturalist-led activities included.

After the transfer from Bharatpur airport and lunch at the Banyan Café or by the pool, your first adventure is an afternoon boat safari floating downstream on the Rapti, ending with sundowners at the confluence as the sun sets over the jungle – watch for gharial and mugger crocodiles and kingfishers along the banks. Day two begins at 6:30 am with a 4–5 hour jeep safari deep into the national park, crossing the Rapti by dugout from the Bhimle army post, with breakfast in the jungle; look for one-horned rhinos, deer, wild boar, sloth bears and, with luck, the Royal Bengal tiger. After a relaxing midday by the pool, an escorted walking safari lets you read tracks and listen to the forest.

On the last morning a Tharu village visit introduces you to the indigenous people of the Terai before your transfer back to Bharatpur airport.

Day 01Bharatpur airport – Barahi Jungle Lodge – Rapti River boat safari with sundowner
Fly from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Bharatpur (approx. 25 minutes). Our representative meets you at Bharatpur Airport and drives you to Barahi Jungle Lodge via Chaubiskothi, about 32 km from the main highway at Bharatpur. On arrival you are served a welcome drink, followed by a short orientation on your program, the lodge’s eco-conscious facilities and safety guidelines. Room keys are then handed over and staff guide you to your rooms.

2:00–3:00 PM – Lunch at Banyan Café or by the pool.
3:30 PM – Boat safari with sundowner (approx. 2 hours): float downstream on the Rapti River towards the western boundary of the park formed by the Himalayan Narayani River, ending with the lodge’s signature sundowner at the confluence point.
7:00 PM – Tharu or Kumal cultural dance: farmers from nearby villages perform the traditional dances, music and skills passed down through generations, in authentic costume to the beat of the traditional drum – a colourful glimpse of local life and culture.

Day 02Jeep safari with breakfast in the jungle – pool time – walking safari
6:30 AM – Wake-up call and breakfast at Banyan Café.
After breakfast – Jeep safari (approx. 4–5 hours): cross the Rapti River by patela (dugout) boat and start from the Bhimle army check post. Our naturalist chooses the route based on current sightings and animal movement: Bhimle Post – Sukhibhar Post towards Kasara (park headquarters); Bhimle Post – Reu River – Surung Khola; or Bhimle Post – Reu River – towards Khoria Muhan Post.
1:00 PM – Lunch at Banyan Cafe or by the pool.
2:30 PM – Walking safari inside the national park (approx. 3–4 hours): cross the Rapti River by patela boat from the put-in point in front of the lodge, then walk with a naturalist to the oxbow lakes (Devi Tal, Munda Tal, Lamo Tal, Kamal Tal) to look for marsh mugger crocodiles, mammals, and aquatic and other birds.
OR 3:30 PM – Short village walk (approx. 2 hours): a walk around a nearby village with an experienced communicator to see the daily life of the Tharu people.
7:00 PM – Tharu or Kumal cultural dance: farmers from nearby villages show their traditional skills and dances.

Notes for this tour

Pace and grade: This is an easy sightseeing tour with short walks on uneven stone steps and temple courtyards; it is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Domestic flights: The Kathmandu–Bharatpur flight (about 20–25 minutes, about USD 266 return) is not included; we can book it for you. By road, the lodge is about 5–6 hours from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Mountain flights depend on visibility and are sometimes delayed or rescheduled; if a flight is cancelled we transfer you by road or adjust the programme. Domestic baggage allowance is normally 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand baggage.
Jungle safari: activities in Chitwan are led by licensed naturalists and follow national park rules; wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Wear neutral-coloured clothing, carry insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat, and keep quiet during the safari. Activity timings may change with season and weather, and some activities may be replaced if the river is high.
Activity schedule: the exact programme for your stay is confirmed by the lodge on arrival and adjusted to the season, weather and park rules.
Flexibility: the order of sightseeing may be changed to suit festivals, temple closing times, flight schedules or road conditions, without missing any included visits.

Note: The actual program for guests stay will be given on arrival at hotel. The activities are adjusted to the length of your stay, as per the season and present weather conditions. Naturally, it may not always be possible to follow this schedule to the minute and the circumstances may force us to alter the program at short notice. On safari in the jungle you will be accompanied by our expert naturalists who will advise on safety procedures and we request you to respect their judgment at all times.

Spreading over 12 hectares, the lodge offers 34 deluxe boutique guest rooms and one family suite. The rooms are built as 28 individual and 6 interconnecting deluxe cottages. Each room opens to a private balcony and private views of the jungle. Each room features a décor with a blend of contemporary and traditional Nepali Furnishings with indigenous elements such as used wood, bamboo, elephant grass and animal arty-crafts.

Dining

Culinary experience at Barahi is an appeasement in itself. The lodge offers authentic Nepalese Cuisine enhanced with organically grown healthy food, topped with Himalayan herbs and homemade pickle. Delectable Continental, Indian, Thai and Chinese too form a part of our menu. At some distance from the cottages, our Tiger’s Den Bar environs in such a way that the motley nature can be felt closely and deeply. Our bar is well-equipped to serve aperitif-spirits, wines and liqueurs.

The evenings are filled with lively performances which brings the forest alive. Colorfully dressed Tharu girls and boys exhibit their culture through dance and music performances forming a rhythm that would definitely sway you with it. We also offer juggling and flaming shows on special requests.

3 days. It starts in Chitwan and ends there. Overnight stops: Barahi Jungle Lodge. The day-by-day itinerary above shows travel times, places visited and meals for each day.

October to March is the most pleasant time on the Terai plains; February to May is best for wildlife sightings but April to June is hot. The tour runs all year, with fewer activities in the July–August monsoon.

The grade is easy. It is suitable for most travellers, including families with children and seniors; walking is mostly short and on paved paths or easy trails.

One-horned rhinoceros, spotted and sambar deer, wild boar, monkeys, gharial and mugger crocodiles and a huge variety of birds (more than 540 species) are seen on most visits. Royal Bengal tigers, leopards and sloth bears live in the park too, but sightings are a matter of luck. February to May, when the tall grass is cut, usually gives the best sightings.

Wear light, neutral-coloured clothing (green, brown, khaki), a long-sleeved shirt and long trousers, closed shoes and a hat. Bring insect repellent, sunscreen and binoculars. Bright colours, perfume and noise disturb the animals.

The Tharu are the indigenous people of the Terai, famous for their painted mud-and-reed houses, fishing and farming traditions, and the lively stick dance performed for visitors in the evening. A village walk with your guide gives an insight into their culture.

Wear clothing in muted colors Deer raise their tails to expose the bright white underside as a warning call – so leave those crisp white shirts at home! Rhinos do not respond kindly to bright colors, such as white and red. Please do not wear these colors so you do not provoke a rhino to charge at you Blending into the jungle colors helps camouflage you, so you can spot animals more easily Recommended colors: Olive green, Sand, Brown, Black. Keep quiet Most animals in the jungle have excellent hearing, so you might scare them away without realising it if you talk Animals are used to the lumbering sounds of the elephant and the drone of the LandRover, but respond to our speech with alarm. If you must converse, do so in a lowered voice Be alert Most wild animals blend excellently into their surroundings, so they are nearly invisible to us. The key to successfully spotting wildlife is to watch out for movement – our eyes are naturally trained for that, you just need to practice it! Also keep your ears tuned for odd rustlings, often it is an animal quietly slipping away!

Wear a pair of comfortable shoes that cover your feet completely, such as walking shoes or sneakers. Leave your flipflops and sandals for lounging around the camp instead. Wear socks with your shoes, preferably those that are higher than ankle-length. Sprinkle some salt just inside and around the edge of your socks Cover exposed skin Wear pants and long-sleeved shirts Keep a hat on Insect repellent If the weather is hot, excess clothing might be uncomfortable. In this case, apply insect repellent liberally on all exposed skin. If you end up with ticks or leeches on you anyway DO NOT attempt to pull it off! You might end up with either a tick head embedded in your skin, or a leech stuck to your finger! Apply a concentrated salt solution/camphor medication to the area until the insect drops off Remember that these insects only take a miniscule amount of your blood, so you could just let them drop off naturally. Apply a topical analgesic (if you have one) to the affected area to treat itching.

Booking your Nepal tour with Pigeon Travel & Tours is easy:

A deposit of 20–30% of the total tour cost is required to confirm your booking.
The remaining balance is payable on arrival in Kathmandu, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Domestic flight tickets, permits and other non-refundable items included in the package are paid at the time of confirmation.
Please send a copy of your passport and your arrival/departure flight details so that we can arrange pick-up, hotels and tickets.

Child Policy

We welcome families, and children are very welcome on our Nepal tours.

Under 5 years: free of charge when sharing their parents' room and bed (no extra bed).
5 to 12 years: discounted child rate – please ask us for the exact price for your dates and hotel.
Above 12 years: charged the full adult rate.
An extra bed or a separate room for children is charged as per the hotel's policy; domestic flights are charged at the airline's child fare.
Children under 10 years receive a free (gratis) Nepal tourist visa on arrival.

Pigeon Travel is easily one of the best travel companies I have dealt with! I don’t know how busy Mr Min Katri is, but i think he has many clients on the go, but he made me feel like I was his only customer. He was so conscientious. The guides he organised for my travels in Nepal: Pokhara, Kathmandu, and the Everest flight, Lumbini and then in India at Kushinara for a few days, was well organised with excellent guides, good drivers and cars and a good choice of hotels.
