For Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of Bon, Mount Kailash (6,638 m) is the holiest mountain on earth – the abode of Lord Shiva and the axis of the universe – and Lake Mansarovar beneath it is the purest of waters. The 13 Days Kailash Heli Tour from Kathmandu is the quickest and most comfortable route to them: instead of days on the road, you fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, take a mountain flight to Simikot in remote Humla and a short helicopter hop to Hilsa on the Tibetan border, and then drive to Purang (Taklakot) and the sacred lake. Flights, helicopter, all meals, accommodation, Tibet visa and Kailash permits, Nepali and Tibetan guides, a Nepali crew and yaks to carry your bags on the parikrama are included.

The yatra begins in Kathmandu with darshan at Pashupatinath and the sleeping Vishnu of Budhanilkantha, and Patan’s Krishna Mandir, while your visa is processed. After a day of acclimatisation in Simikot (2,950 m) and Purang (3,900 m), you reach Mansarovar (4,590 m) for puja, havan and a holy bath, with a parikrama of the lake by vehicle.

From Darchen you set out on the three-day Kailash parikrama: up the Lha Chu valley to Dirapuk beneath the north face, over the Dolma La (about 5,630 m) and past Gauri Kund to Zuthulphuk, and back to the road – the sacred circuit that is said to wash away the sins of a lifetime. You then return the same way to Kathmandu.

Wake early to watch the sun rise over the sacred waters of Lake Mansarovar (4,590 m), created according to Hindu belief from the mind of Lord Brahma. Perform puja and havan, take a holy dip (or sprinkle the holy water), and drive around part of the lake – one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world – with views of Kailash, Gurla Mandhata and the Chiu Gompa. The hardest and most sacred day. Climb steadily past Shiva Tsal to the prayer-flag-covered Dolma La, the high point of the pilgrimage, where pilgrims leave offerings to the goddess Tara. Below lies the emerald Gauri Kund lake, where Parvati is said to have bathed. A long, steep descent leads into the Lham Chu Khir valley and on to Zuthulphuk, associated with the yogi Milarepa.

Trip Notes

Notes for this tour

Altitude: the yatra reaches about 5,630 m at the Dolma La and sleeps above 4,500 m for several nights. Acclimatisation stops are built in at Simikot and Purang; walk slowly, drink 4 litres of water a day and descend if symptoms worsen. A medical check-up before travel and insurance covering helicopter evacuation are strongly recommended. Ponies and porters for the parikrama can be hired locally.
Visa and permits: the Tibet group visa, Tibet Travel Permit, special Kailash–Mansarovar permit and Simikot restricted-area permit are arranged by us; send a clear passport scan at least one month before departure. Indian passport holders follow separate rules – please ask us.
Guide and rules: foreigners in Tibet must travel with a licensed Tibetan guide on a fixed itinerary. Photography is not allowed inside most chapels, and permits can occasionally be suspended at short notice by the authorities.
Climate: days are sunny and dry but nights are cold, even in summer; bring layers, a warm jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. April–October is the main season.
Accommodation: in the Kailash region you stay in simple guesthouses on a group-sharing basis; bring a good sleeping bag, down jacket, thermals, rain gear and trekking boots.
Flights: Simikot and Hilsa flights depend on the weather and can be delayed; extra nights caused by delays are not included.
Flexibility: the order of visits may change because of monastery opening times, festivals, weather or permit conditions.

The grade is moderate, with a maximum altitude of about 5,613 m. Most healthy travellers manage well, but please take care at high altitude and consult your doctor if you have heart or breathing problems. Children and seniors are welcome with sensible precautions.

Flights are operated by licensed Nepali helicopter companies with experienced mountain pilots. Mountain flights depend on visibility; if the weather is unsafe, the flight is rescheduled to the next suitable day or, if that is not possible, refunded according to the operator's policy. Morning departures usually have the clearest skies.

Most mountain helicopters carry up to 5 passengers, with weight limits that vary with altitude. You can book individual seats on a group flight or charter the whole helicopter for a private trip.

Only Hindus may enter the main courtyard of Pashupatinath, but everyone can explore the rest of the complex and view the temple, the ghats and the cremation ceremonies from the terraces on the east bank of the Bagmati River.

Dress modestly at temples, monasteries, mosques and other holy places: cover your shoulders and knees, remove shoes (and hats) where asked, and walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels in Buddhist sites. Ask before photographing people, monks or rituals, and note that photography is not allowed inside some shrines.
