Overview

The Chota Char Dham of Uttarakhand – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – is one of the most important pilgrimages in Hinduism, believed to wash away sins and open the way to moksha. Until the 1950s it meant weeks of walking through the hills; today our 10 Days Chardham Yatra Tour from Haridwar takes you by private air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver along the mountain roads of the Garhwal Himalaya, with hotel accommodation, breakfast and dinner, all tolls, taxes, parking and driver allowances included.

From Haridwar you drive via Mussoorie and Kempty Falls into the Yamuna valley to Barkot, then trek (or ride a pony) from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri, source of the Yamuna, for a holy dip in the hot Surya Kund and darshan. Next comes Uttarkashi and a day trip up the Bhagirathi valley, past the Gangnani hot springs and Harsil, to Gangotri, the temple of Mother Ganga. A long scenic drive past Tehri Lake brings you to Sitapur/Guptkashi, the base for Kedarnath (3,583 m), one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, reached by a 16 km trek from Gaurikund (or by helicopter) for the evening aarti and morning darshan.

The yatra continues via Chopta and Joshimath to Badrinath (3,300 m), abode of Lord Vishnu beneath the Neelkanth peak, with its Tapt Kund hot spring and nearby Mana, the last village before Tibet. The return descends past the sacred river confluences of Nandprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag to Rishikesh and Haridwar for the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.

Who is it for?

Hindu pilgrims and families (minimum two people). The roads are long and the Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks are demanding at altitude; ponies, palanquins and helicopters can be arranged. The yatra season is May to June and September to October; the temples close in winter.

Start comfortably after breakfast and an early-morning bath in the Ganga. Drive via Dehradun and Mussoorie, with a short break at Kempty Falls, into the Yamuna valley to Barkot. In peak season, heavy traffic in Mussoorie may mean a diversion via Vikas Nagar.

Notes for this tour

Visa: most foreign nationals need an Indian e-Visa, applied for online before travel (not included). Nepali citizens do not need a visa; Bhutanese and some others have special rules.
Closing days: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays; Akshardham and the Lotus Temple are closed on Mondays. The order of visits is adjusted accordingly.
Dress and etiquette: dress modestly at temples, mosques and Gurdwaras – cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes, and women may need a scarf. Ask before photographing people.
Health and comfort: drink only bottled or filtered water, carry hand sanitiser and sunscreen, and expect busy roads and crowds. Summers (April–June) are very hot; October–March is the best season.
Altitude and treks: Yamunotri (3,293 m) and Kedarnath (3,583 m) are reached on foot; walk slowly and carry warm clothes, rain gear and medicines. Ponies, palanquins and Kedarnath helicopter tickets are extra.
Registration: all pilgrims must register online with the Uttarakhand government before the yatra; we help you with this.
Roads: landslides and traffic can delay journeys, especially in the monsoon; extra costs caused by roadblocks are not included.
Vehicles: air-conditioned sedan for 1–2 travellers, Toyota Innova for 3–5, Tempo Traveller for larger groups, with an experienced driver.

The grade is easy, with a maximum altitude of about 3,600 m. Most healthy travellers manage well, but please take care at high altitude and consult your doctor if you have heart or breathing problems. Children and seniors are welcome with sensible precautions.

No technical skills are needed, but you should be in good health and able to walk for several hours a day on uneven mountain trails. Regular walking, hiking and cardio exercise in the weeks before your trip will make it much more enjoyable.

Yes. Travel insurance covering trekking at the maximum altitude of your itinerary, including emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment, is mandatory for all trekkers.

Yes, porters are included as stated in the package (normally one porter for two trekkers, carrying up to about 20–25 kg in total). You carry only a small daypack with water, camera, snacks and a warm layer. Extra luggage can be left safely at your hotel.

Dress modestly at temples, monasteries, mosques and other holy places: cover your shoulders and knees, remove shoes (and hats) where asked, and walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels in Buddhist sites. Ask before photographing people, monks or rituals, and note that photography is not allowed inside some shrines.

Pigeon Travel is easily one of the best travel companies I have dealt with! The guides he organised for my travels in Nepal: Pokhara, Kathmandu, and the Everest flight, Lumbini and then in India at Kushinara for a few days, was well organised with excellent guides, good drivers and cars and a good choice of hotels.
