Escape the city for a day on the green south-western rim of the Kathmandu Valley. The Champadevi Day Hike climbs from the pine forest of Hattiban above Pharping along a quiet ridge to the hilltop shrine of Champadevi (2,285 m), decorated with prayer flags and offering one of the widest views of any hike near Kathmandu – the whole valley spread out below, and on clear days a Himalayan panorama from Annapurna and Manaslu through Ganesh Himal and Langtang to Gauri Shankar and, far to the east, Everest.
The trail winds through forest of pine, oak and rhododendron, past small Tamang farms and viewpoints, and is shared mainly with local pilgrims and birdwatchers. After the summit you descend to Pharping, an important Buddhist pilgrimage town with cliff-side monasteries and the caves where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have meditated, before driving back to Kathmandu. A private vehicle, an English-speaking guide and drinking water are included.
The route at a glance
Drive from Kathmandu to Hattiban (about 1 hour), hike up the ridge to Champadevi (2–2.5 hours), descend to Pharping (about 2 hours), visit the monasteries and drive back to Kathmandu (about 1 hour).
