Perched on a ridge at about 2,016 m in Lamjung district, Ghale Gaun is a village of around a hundred traditional stone houses with slate roofs, the ancestral home of the Ghale clan and one of Nepal’s best-known Gurung community homestays. It faces a stunning wall of snow peaks – Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II and IV, Machhapuchhre, Manaslu and Himalchuli – that turn pink and gold at sunrise. Our 2 Days Ghale Gaun Village Tour (1 night / 2 days) takes you there from Kathmandu by private vehicle, with all meals during your stay and an English-speaking local guide for foreign guests.
The drive follows the Prithvi Highway west to Dumre, then turns north up the Marsyangdi valley to Besisahar, the starting point of the Annapurna Circuit, before climbing a hill road through terraced fields and forest to the village. On arrival the village mothers’ group welcomes you with garlands, tika and a cultural programme of Gurung songs and dances. You stay with a local family, share home-cooked meals and learn about Gurung traditions – many families here have a proud history of service as Gurkha soldiers.
Next morning a five-minute walk brings you to the village viewing tower for sunrise over the Manaslu, Annapurna and Lamjung ranges. After breakfast your guide leads you to neighbouring Bhujung, one of the largest Gurung villages in Nepal and famous for its wild honey hunting, past the historic Uttarkanya Temple and a small tea garden, before you drive back to Kathmandu.
