In the green hills of Syangja, south-west of Pokhara, the Gurung village of Sirubari (about 1,700 m) launched Nepal’s very first official village homestay programme in 1997 – and it remains a model for community tourism today. Neat stone-paved lanes, slate-roofed houses, flower gardens and terraced fields make it one of the cleanest and most charming villages in the country. On the 2 Days Sirubari Village Tour (1 night / 2 days) you drive from Pokhara by 4WD, stay with a local family, share their home-cooked meals and see Gurung culture from the inside.
Sirubari is a farming community, and many of its families have a proud history of service as Gurkha soldiers in the British and Indian armies. Guests are welcomed with flower garlands and tika, then a local guide shows you around the village – the houses, the community hall, the school and the terraces of rice, millet and maize. In the evening the village mothers’ group performs traditional Gurung songs and dances, and you sit down to dal bhat and local chicken with your hosts.
Next morning hike up to Dhare (Thumro) Hill, the highest point of the area, for sunrise over a grand Himalayan panorama – from Manaslu in the east, past the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre, to the Dhaulagiri range in the west. After breakfast and lunch in the village, drive back to Pokhara.
