A private morning pilgrimage to the birthplace of Sita. The Janakpur Heli Tour (about 3 hours, about 60 minutes of flying) takes you by helicopter from Kathmandu over the Mahabharat hills and down to the Terai plains in about 30 minutes, to Janakpurdham – the ancient capital of King Janak’s Mithila kingdom, where Sita (Janaki), consort of Lord Ram, is believed to have been found and raised. It is the fastest and most comfortable way to combine darshan at Janakpur’s great temples with a scenic flight.
From the air you see the terraced hills of Kavre and Sindhuli, the Kamala and Bagmati rivers and the patchwork of rice fields and ponds of the Terai. In Janakpur you visit the white marble Janaki Mandir, completed in 1910 in a blend of Mughal and Rajput styles and the largest temple in Nepal, for darshan, and – time permitting – the Vivah Mandap, the wedding pavilion of Ram and Sita, and the sacred Ganga Sagar pond. The bright Mithila paintings on house walls are a highlight of this colourful region. After 30–45 minutes on the ground you fly back to Kathmandu.
Airport transfers with an escort, the helicopter flight and permits are included; ground transport between Janakpur airport and the temple and entrance fees are paid locally.
