Overview

See the world’s highest mountain face to face – and be back in Kathmandu before lunch. The Everest Heli Tour (about 4–5 hours, 3–4 hours flying) is a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter sightseeing trip from Kathmandu along the Himalaya to Lukla, up the Dudh Koshi valley past Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery, over the Khumbu Glacier to land near Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the classic viewpoint facing Everest (8,849 m), with Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and Ama Dablam all around.

The morning starts with a bird’s-eye view of the Kathmandu Valley, then a sweeping panorama of white peaks, green hills and glaciated passes – Gauri Shankar, Melungtse, Cho Oyu and the Mahalangur range. After refuelling in Lukla, the helicopter flies up the Khumbu, giving you a glimpse of historic gompas, emerald glacial lakes and Everest Base Camp beneath the Khumbu Icefall. You land at Kala Patthar for a short photo stop facing the summit, then fly down to Syangboche for breakfast on the terrace of the Hotel Everest View, one of the highest hotels in the world, with Everest and Ama Dablam on the horizon.

Airport transfers with an escort, the helicopter sightseeing, breakfast at Hotel Everest View and national park permits are included. Seats can be booked on a shared flight or the whole helicopter chartered for a private tour.

Notes for this flight

Weather and flying: helicopter flights depend on mountain visibility and usually depart early in the morning, when skies are clearest. If the weather is unsafe the flight is delayed, rescheduled or cancelled for your safety; please keep a spare day if possible.
Weight and seats: helicopters (typically Airbus AS350 B3 or Bell 407) carry up to 5 passengers at lower altitudes but fewer at high landing sites because of weight limits. Please tell us each passenger's weight when booking.
Altitude: high landing sites are reached within minutes from Kathmandu without acclimatisation, so ground time is kept short. Move slowly, avoid exertion and tell the pilot at once if you feel unwell. People with heart, lung or blood-pressure problems, pregnant women and infants should consult a doctor first.
What to bring: warm jacket, hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen and camera; bring your passport for the airport and permit checks.
Ground time at Kala Patthar: usually 5–7 minutes because of the altitude and thin air; the longer stop is at Hotel Everest View (about 3,880 m).

4-5 Hour. It starts in Kathmandu and ends there. It is a day trip with hotel pick-up and drop-off. The day-by-day itinerary above shows travel times, places visited and meals for each day.

It runs all year. October to December and February to April usually offer clear skies and pleasant temperatures; June to September is the monsoon, with green landscapes but more cloud and rain.

The grade is moderate, with a maximum altitude of about 5,545 m. Most healthy travellers manage well, but please take care at high altitude and consult your doctor if you have heart or breathing problems. Children and seniors are welcome with sensible precautions.

In the peak seasons (spring and autumn) most Lukla flights operate from Ramechhap (Manthali), about 4 hours by road from Kathmandu, with very early departures. In other months they may leave from Kathmandu. Flights depend on mountain weather, so please keep 1–2 spare days at the end of your trip.

No technical skills are needed, but you should be in good health and able to walk for several hours a day on uneven mountain trails. Regular walking, hiking and cardio exercise in the weeks before your trip will make it much more enjoyable.

Yes. Travel insurance covering trekking at the maximum altitude of your itinerary, including emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment, is mandatory for all trekkers.

Yes, porters are included as stated in the package (normally one porter for two trekkers, carrying up to about 20–25 kg in total). You carry only a small daypack with water, camera, snacks and a warm layer. Extra luggage can be left safely at your hotel.

Air Ambulance (as a helicopter/aero plane) needs to have a doctor onboard with necessary equipments. An air ambulance service is a service used for medical evacuation for clients from all over the country in case of emergencies or serious health conditions. It is equipped with most of the necessary medical facilities for evacuation such as oxygen, first aid kit etc

We take patients to Norvic Hospital (www.norvichospital.com)(located at Thapathali about 4kms from the airport, one of the best and medically equipped (to the highest standards) Hospitals of Nepal. Also if you have your own choice of a Hospital you would like to be taken to, we would be more than glad to help/assist you get there.

Yes, Helicopters are permitted to land at the hospital premises if need be during rescue evacuations provided the hospital has a helipad or an open space wide and safe enough for us to land. The different hospitals that have facilities as mentioned above include Shahid Gangalal Heart Care Hospital, Teaching Hospital (Kathmandu), Manipal Hospital (Pokhara) or any Army hospital if they give us the authority to.

Booking your Nepal tour with Pigeon Travel & Tours is easy:

Book online with the Book Now button when it is active, or send us the enquiry form / email with your dates, number of travellers and hotel preference.
A deposit of 20–30% of the total tour cost is required to confirm your booking.
The remaining balance is payable on arrival in Kathmandu, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Domestic flight tickets, permits and other non-refundable items included in the package are paid at the time of confirmation.
Please send a copy of your passport and your arrival/departure flight details so that we can arrange pick-up, hotels and tickets.
Your booking is confirmed once the deposit and the completed booking details are received and we send you a written confirmation.

Child Policy

We welcome families, and children are very welcome on our Nepal tours.

Under 5 years: free of charge when sharing their parents' room and bed (no extra bed).
5 to 12 years: discounted child rate – please ask us for the exact price for your dates and hotel.
Above 12 years: charged the full adult rate.
An extra bed or a separate room for children is charged as per the hotel's policy; domestic flights are charged at the airline's child fare.
Children under 10 years receive a free (gratis) Nepal tourist visa on arrival.
