A complete week in Nepal by road: our 7 Days Kathmandu, Pokhara & Nagarkot Overland Tour visits the country’s three most-loved destinations at a gentle pace, with a private car and licensed guide. You explore the World Heritage temples and royal squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, spend two nights by the lake in Pokhara beneath the Annapurna range, and finish with a night on the cool ridge of Nagarkot for a Himalayan sunset and sunrise.

The itinerary is well balanced: active sightseeing days alternate with scenic drives and a free evening in Thamel, so you never feel rushed. Along the way you see Hindu and Buddhist Nepal side by side – the great stupa of Boudhanath and the sacred Shiva temple of Pashupatinath on your first day – as well as everyday life in the hills on the 200 km road to Pokhara beside the Trishuli River.

In Pokhara you go boating on Phewa Lake and wake at 5:30 am for sunrise from Sarangkot (1,600 m), one of the finest mountain views in Nepal. Back in the valley, a full day covers Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Patan, followed by medieval Bhaktapur on the way up to Nagarkot (2,175 m). From there, on a clear morning, the Himalaya stretches across the horizon from Dhaulagiri to Everest.

Our representative welcomes you at Tribhuvan International Airport, escorts you to your hotel and explains your tour programme in detail. Later, enjoy a half-day guided tour of the valley's two most sacred sites. Boudhanath Stupa, 2 km north of Pashupatinath, is the largest stupa in Nepal and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist shrine outside Tibet, surrounded by monasteries, thangka studios and prayer wheels. Pashupatinath Temple, on the holy Bagmati River, is the most important Shiva temple in the Hindu world, with golden roofs, silver doors and riverside ghats where cremations follow ancient rites.

After breakfast, drive west to Pokhara, one of the most picturesque valleys in Nepal, lying in the shadow of the Annapurna range. The road follows the Trishuli River past terraced farms and villages of many ethnic groups; stop for lunch beside the river at Kurintar. Pokhara is a resort city of remarkable beauty – the calm of Phewa Lake with the perfect pyramid of Machhapuchhre rising behind it is one of Nepal's classic views. In the evening, take a boat across the lake to the island temple of Tal Barahi.

Day 03Sarangkot sunrise and full-day Pokhara sightseeing
Sightseeing by private vehicle; Sarangkot pick-up at 5:30 am | Overnight: Pokhara

Your driver collects you at 5:30 am for the short drive up to Sarangkot, a 1,600 m hill on the northern shore of Phewa Lake, where a viewing tower looks out over the Pokhara valley and a long wall of Himalayan peaks – Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. As the sun rises, the snow turns from pink to gold. Back at the hotel for breakfast, then continue with your guide to the World Peace Pagoda on the forested ridge across the lake, Devi's Falls (Patale Chhango), where the water vanishes underground, and the Shiva shrine of Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave.

The afternoon is free to explore Lakeside's cafés and shops, or to try paragliding, a lake-shore cycle ride or a soothing massage (optional).

Day 04Drive back to Kathmandu (200 km, about 6 hours) – free evening in Thamel

After breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu through the hill country and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is free – a welcome break in the middle of the trip. If you feel like it, explore the nearby markets or Thamel, Kathmandu's tourist district, which bustles with activity late into the evening and is only a 10-minute walk from the old city centre.

Day 05Full-day Kathmandu sightseeing: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Patan

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a complex of palaces, courtyards and temples – Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the Kumari Ghar (abode of the living goddess) and the Taleju Temple – built between the 12th and 18th centuries as the seat of the Malla kings. Next, climb to Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa with the Buddha's all-seeing eyes and a panoramic view of the valley. In the afternoon cross to Patan, the city of fine arts, to see the stone Krishna Mandir, the Golden Temple and the superb Patan Museum.

Day 06Bhaktapur Durbar Square and drive up to Nagarkot for sunset (30 km, 1.5 hours)

Drive east to Bhaktapur Durbar Square (1,401 m), the plaza in front of the royal palace of the old Bhaktapur kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the Golden Gate, the Palace of 55 Windows, the five-storey Nyatapola Temple and the potters at work in Pottery Square, and taste Bhaktapur's famous juju dhau curd. Continue up to Nagarkot on the valley rim and watch the sun set over the Himalaya from your hotel.

Notes for this tour

Pace and grade: This is an easy sightseeing tour with short walks on uneven stone steps and temple courtyards; it is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Temple etiquette: please dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), remove shoes where asked, walk clockwise around stupas and ask before photographing people or rituals. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main courtyard of Pashupatinath, but the whole complex can be seen from the east bank.
Road travel: The Kathmandu–Pokhara Prithvi Highway drive (about 200 km) takes 6–7 hours. The Kathmandu–Nagarkot drive is about 32 km (1–1.5 hours) on a winding hill road. Hill roads are winding and travel times can vary with traffic, road works and weather – we stop regularly for tea, toilets and photographs. Please tell us if you suffer from motion sickness.
Mountain views: sunrise and sunset views of the Himalaya from Sarangkot and Nagarkot depend on clear weather. October–December and February–April usually offer the clearest skies; in the monsoon (June–September) clouds often hide the peaks after early morning. Mornings and evenings in the hills are cool – bring a warm layer.
Early starts: Sunrise at Sarangkot and Nagarkot means an early start (about 5:00 am).
Flexibility: the order of sightseeing may be changed to suit festivals, temple closing times, flight schedules or road conditions, without missing any included visits.

In the event of cancellation of tour / travel/Trekking services – due to any avoidable / unavoidable reason, you must be informed in writing. Cancellation charges would be effective from the date we receive advice in writing and cancellation charges would be as follows:-

Before 60 days – No cancellation charge.
From 60 days to 45 days – 5% of the total tour / service cost
From 45 days to 15 days – 10% of the total tour / service cost
From 15 days to 07 days – 15% of the total tour / service cost
From 07 days to 02 days (48 hrs) – 30% of the total tour / service cost

In case you cancel the trip after commencement, refund would be restricted to a limited amount, which too would depend on the amount that we would be able to recover from the hoteliers/contractors we patronize.
