Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia. Nepal is commonly divided into three physiographic areas: the Mountain, Hill, Siwalik region and Terai Regions. These ecological belts run east-west and are vertically intersected by Nepal’s major, north to south flowing river systems. The southern lowland plains or Terai bordering India are part of the northern rim of the Indo-Gangetic plains. They were formed and are fed by three major rivers: the Koshi, the Narayani, and the Karnali. This region has a subtropical to tropical climate.
Climate from June to August the monsoon time and only city to city based tour we recommend. The post-monsoon period from September to November is considered best time in Nepal. The park is surrounded by alpine coniferous vegetation and offers a representative sample of the region’s flora and fauna. More than 500 different kinds of flowers, 20 species of mammals and 214 species of birds can be observed in the Rara National Park. As for life in the lake, the snow trout is one of the fish varieties recorded here so far.
The rich vegetation of the park supports diverse species of wildlife including the endangered red panda, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, leopard, jackal, Himalayan tahr, Yellow-throated martin, wild dog, wild boar, common langur, rhesus macaque and the common otter. During winter the park abounds in bird varieties like coots, great-crested grebe, black-necked grebe, red crested pochard, mallard, common teal, merganser and gulls. Migrant water fowl and gallinaceous birds can also be seen during certain seasons.
Rara in the far north western part of Nepal is the smallest national park in the country, while the Rara Lake is Nepal’s biggest lake. The lake is 167m deep at some places, and drains into the rivers Mugu Karnali via Nijar Khola. Chuchemara Hill at 4,087m is the best vantage point to enjoy magnificent views of the deep blue lake, the forested hillsides and the snowcapped peaks.
Murma Top ( 3630m)
Murma Top is around one and half hour walk from Murma village, around 2 hours from the lake. From Murma top you will be able to enjoy great views over Rara Lake (in the east) as well as tunning views towards the south, west and north.
Nepalgunj is industrial and transport hub of the far west Nepal. It is the gateway to some of the world’s best and scenic trekking routes for lower and Upper Dolpa and other western Himalayas. It is also centre for Nepal’s famous amazing wildlife, jungle safari, jungle adventure reserve parks like Bardia National Park, Rara National Park, Shey-Phoksumdo Park, Khaptad National park. The heart of Nepalgunj is Tribhuwan square. Hindu worship and trade is centered around the Bageshwari Mandir; behind the temple is a large pool with a jaunty statue of Mahadev (Shiva) in the middle – marvellously kitsch. Huge number of devotes, even from neighboring country India, can be seen during the nine days of Hindu festival season ‘Ramnavami’ falling in last of September or starting of October and on ‘Mahashivratri’.
