Ilam District is located in the Eastern Development Region of Nepal. It neighbouring districts are Panchthar to the North, Morang to the West, Jhapa to the South and West Bangal of India to the East. The District covers 1703 square km of mountainous terrain ranging from 610 to 3636 meters above the sea level. Major rivers include Mai, Jogmai, Puwamai, Deomai and Siddhikola. The climate varies with altitude from sub-tropical to temperate. The hills of Ilam district (like those of Darjeeling, just across the border) are perfect place to grow tea. Ilam town, headquarters of the district, is a tidy little bazaar whose colorfully painted wooden houses, featuring prim balconies and decorated eaves, give it an unmistakably alpine air.
Bhadrapur is the easternmost city of Nepal located in Jhapa district. It is about 476km east of Kathmandu using BP highway and takes about 50 minutes by flight. Bhadrapur is just 30minute drive away from Kakarvitta which is border town with India and also entry point to Darjeeling,Sikkim,Siliguri,Bagdogra Airport and Bhutan ( For foreigners other than Indian tourist this exit point is not open).
SANU PATHIBHARA is a shrine at the top of Kutidanda and Hanspokhari on the Mechi Highway. Sanu (smaller) Pathibhara ( Holy Hindu goddess temple) is regarded as the younger sister of the bigger Pathibhara Temple in Taplejung. The hill is covered with forests and offers views of the Terai plains, the Mahabharat range and Mt. Kanchenjunga from Kanyam. This hike takes approx. 2 hour.
KANYAM AND FIKKAL: On the way to Ilam Bazaar, Kanyam and Fikkal have large tea estates since 1972AD. These tea gardens are popular among tourists for picnicking, sightseeing and photography. Fikkal is a business center in eastern Ilam and lies on the Mechi Highway leading to Ilam. It is also the junction from where one can go to the eastern border city of Pashupatinagar adjacent to Darjeeling. Indian and Nepali nationals can cross over to the other side of the border with valid documents. Stay overnight in Hotel.
ANTU DANDA: Situated at an altitude of 2,328 m, Antu Danda is famous for its spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset over the eastern Himalaya. From here, magnificent views of the 8,586m Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest peak, as well as Kumbhakarna and other snowy summits can be had. Antu Danda is surrounded by scenic terraces, slopes and plains covered by different types of vegetation. Ilam Bazar is in 90km north from Bhadrapur airport in the far eastern district of the country which is inhabited by people of different culture, Nature living together peacefully. Illam is located on the foothills of Mount Kanchanjunga and also known as Mai Valley. We can find large land of lush-green tea gardens in Illam and the rolling hills covered with tea leaves are simply wonderful. Greenery is all over the hills of Illam all around the year. Illam Tea Garden is situated near Illam Bazaar and Kanyam Tea Garden located between Terai plain and ILam Bazaar. This hill top station is famous for its green hills, fertile lands and the cool temperate climate.
MAI POKHARI (2,121 m): A popular pilgrimage site, Mai Pokhari is a 9-cornered pristine lake considered the sacred abode of Goddess Bhagawati. It lies 13 km north of Ilam Bazaar and is surrounded by dense forests of fir, juniper, birch, pine and medicinal plants. Maipokhari is listed in Ramsar by Unesco.. Rare animals like the musk deer, leopard, porcupine, jackal as well as numerous migratory birds and rare insects are found in the area. People from different parts of Nepal visit Mai Pokhari in Ilam for an annual festival on Kartik Ekadasi which falls in October-November. Mai Pokhari is about 1 ½ hours’ drive from Ilam Bazaar.
