Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is bordered to the north by Tibet of the Peoples Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by the Republic of India. With an area of 147,181 square Kilometers (56,827 sq mile) and a population of approximately 30.89 million [2023 AD], Nepal is the world’s 93rd largest country by land mass and the 49th most populous country. Kathmandu is the nation’s capital and the country’s largest metropolitan city. Nepal has certain unique things like 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in One Country,8 out of 14 Highest Mountain Peaks in the World, birth place of goddess Sita, birth place of lord Gautam Buddha, beautiful lakes, different religions, Nepalese cuisine, paradise for trekkers & safer travel destination.
Nepal is of roughly trapezoidal shape, 800 kilometer (500 mile) long and 200 kilometer (125 mile) wide in average. See List of territories by size for the comparative size of Nepal. Nepal is commonly divided into three physiographic areas: the Mountain, Hill, Siwalik region and Terai Regions. These ecological belts run east-west and are vertically intersected by Nepal’s major, north to south flowing river systems. The southern lowland plains or Terai bordering India are part of the northern rim of the Indo-Gangetic plains. They were formed and are fed by three major rivers: the Koshi, the Narayani, and the Karnali. This region has a subtropical to tropical climate.
Climate from June to August the monsoon time and only city to city based tour we recommend. The post-monsoon period from September to November is considered best time in Nepal. It will be clean air and excellent mountain views can be seen. Days are warm and sunny, although nights become increasingly cool. Winter time from December to February is dry and clear with temperatures dropping below freezing especially at high altitudes places, although in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini it can still sometimes reach a pleasant 25C. Spring (March to May) is warmer and considered second high season for tour is a particularly beautiful time to visit as the rhododendrons and the orchids are in flower.
The Kulekhani, Markhu, and Chitlang tour is a popular destination for nature lovers and travelers who want to experience the serene beauty of rural Nepal, while also enjoying outdoor activities like hiking and exploring traditional villages. These places are located in the Makwanpur District, which is relatively close to Kathmandu, making it an ideal getaway for a short trip.
Chitlang is a fertile valley with a small stream flowing through the open verdant rice fields and vegetable patches. With the use of water from this stream for irrigation, the valley supplies a larger amount of vegetables to Kathmandu in the form of cabbage, radishes and more. The village is spread along the main road but actually consists of several different settlements with the original Newar village sitting in the center between the other settlements. The first settlement encountered is inhabited predominantly by Tamang people followed by the current center of Chitlang which has a police post, shops and a few eateries. The resort and one of the home stays are on the other side of the stream while the other home stays are not far from the main road. Amazingly walking from one end of Chitlang to the other end takes almost an hour.
The Chandragiri-Chitlang-Kulekhani road is a historic route coming into or going out of Kathmandu and was once the only means to enter this enchanting valley. Vintage photographs show sixty porters struggling to carry a motor car along this road which was quite a feat considering the uphill climb to the Chandragiri pass before descending to Kathmandu. Although once an important thoroughfare, the road rarely sees long distance travelers these days but serves as a good hike to Chitlang and Kulekhani.
Goat cheese farm
There is a homestay in the village of Chitlang that makes fresh goat cheese and plum wine. I tasted the cheese and then the wine and both of them were fantastic. Surprisingly, this was the first goat cheese factory established in Nepal. I also purchased some extra soft cheese for later.
Bheda Farm
After a short walk from the goat cheese factory, I reached the famous Bheda Farm, a lush green ground, which I heard is the largest ground in Nepal. The cows and goats grazing peacefully on the ground made the sight even more relaxing. The surrounding hills brought so much elegance and peace into the surroundings. I sat there quietly for almost twenty minutes.
Satdhara
During the evening, I visited the iconic Satdhara, seven natural water springs in the middle of a jungle. A local villager accompanied me and explained to me the religious and cultural importance of the place. The sounds of the water flowing and the birds chirping just made my evening so much better. And that was it for the day.
Kulekhani
Kulekhani is a small village and lake area, known for the Kulekhani Dam, which is a major source of hydroelectric power for Nepal. The Kulekhani reservoir provides a calm and beautiful setting, surrounded by hills and forests. It is a peaceful place to enjoy boating, fishing, and picnic activities. The area is also known for its scenic viewpoints and hiking routes, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Markhu
Markhu is a village near the Kulekhani Lake, situated along the banks of the reservoir. It is known for its picturesque surroundings, with terraced fields, lush green hills, and the lake itself. Markhu is often a quiet retreat, where you can enjoy village life and natural beauty. Visitors can take a boat ride on the lake, visit local temples, or go trekking in the nearby hills. The area also offers homestay options, providing an opportunity to experience local hospitality and cuisine.
