Janakpurdham, is one of the historical and religious city of Nepal. Janakpur is the administrative headquarters of Dhanusa District of the Janakpur Zone and has a population of approximately 80,000. The city is located about 400 km south-east of Kathmandu, 20 km from the Indian border. Janakpur city is the birth place of Goddess Sita, and is the home of the unique Mithila culture in Nepal.
The centre of Janakpur is dominated by the impressive Janaki Mandir to the north and west of the market. The oldest temple in Janakpur is Ram Mandir, built by the Gurkhali soldier Amar Singh Thapa.
Vivha Mandap is located beside Janaki Mandir. Sankamochan, Ratansagar Mandir, Agnikund, Dulha-Dulhin Mandir, Biharkund Mandir, Dhanusadham, Jaleswor Mahadev are other temples in and around the city.
VibhaPanchami, Ram Nawami, Holi, Dashain, Tihar ( Dipawali), Chatt puja are the major festivals that are celebrated in the city with lots of joy and harmony.
Mithila Art, one of the ancient traditional arts, is the indigenous art of Maithili people. It is said that Mithila Art was originated about three thousand years back when great Aryans started a settled life in this region and had started making pictures on the walls for decoration. The Art gives stress upon the cultural background of Maithili people.
